Regional public universities serve an important role. They focus more than flagship research institutions on improving access and opportunities for students of color, low-income students, and first-generation students.

But they face dropping enrollment, poor public perception, increasing competition, and dwindling federal funding.

The Chronicle surveyed 404 administrators to better understand their challenges and opportunities.

Despite tangible problems, we found that higher education leaders remain optimistic about a few pathways to continued success, including:
  • Providing more online education.
  • Expanding workforce preparation programs.
  • Optimizing student services.
  • Offering non-degree credentials.
  • Exploring partnerships with nearby institutions.
