Tech-transfer initiatives serve higher education institutions in a variety of ways; no single program is ideal for every college or university.
Tech-transfer programs at colleges are not all successful, and many critics question their impact on scientific discovery. Those in favor of improving these tech-transfer initiatives feel that the definition of success should be expanded beyond financial achievement. Many technological discoveries can have advantages in other areas, such as social and economic influence, if not monetary gains.
Different institutions handle tech-transfer initiatives in various ways. Some campus programs are effective in cultivating both innovation and business relationships. Students are encouraged to contact firms that may be interested in funding their start-up or hiring students in the future. Other institutions may place a greater focus on entrepreneurship than on patenting.
As federal funding for tech-transfer continues, it is worth considering how your institution can effectively innovate and contribute.
